How Does Machismo Hurt Women

I believe that the attitude and practice of machismo and hip-hop definitely hurts both women and men. Machismo is this idea that Latin men are “physically aggressive, sexually promiscuous, dominant over women, and excessive using of alcohol” (text: 105). Hip-hop has lyrics and music videos that degrade women in multiple ways. In the video, Byron Hurt was interviewing some young men and women about what they thought of when women were referred to as ‘bitches.’ Most of the men said that they thought this was okay because of the way women dressed and presented themselves without even talking to or knowing these women. When Hurt then asked the women, some said that it didn’t even bother them; it didn’t bother them because the lyrics were not talking specifically about them as a person. However, Hurt brought up a point in the video that if George Bush was to go on to TV and say that all black people were the n-word, would black people be saying, “Oh, I know he’s not talking specifically about me as a person.” Wrong. When lyrics degrade women and call them bitches and other terrible things, it is hurting and putting down all women, not just a select few. As a result of all this, the people who run the hip-hop industry are not supporting women in any way.
