The media affects different athletes in different ways. Johnny Manziel, NFL quarterback and media grandstand, demonstrates how all the media attention on him has revealed his true character, and how he has run into trouble with the law several times. The media has also affected Tim Tebow, who is a free agent quarterback in the NFL. In 2011, Tim Tebow’s division playoff win brought even more media attention to him than he already had, and he gained hundreds of thousand social media followers. Because of the media’s attention on sports and athletes, fans see more than just the live games. However, the media’s attention of sports isn’t always bad. In fact, there are many advantages that come with the media’s strong focus on live sports events, but there are also so disadvantages too. The many advantages of media attention of live sports events can cause viewers to see sports in a new way. Fans can often get a detailed view by watching games on TV. Sometimes, sports event times have to be changed because of broadcasting company availability. Also, even if the event time isn’t changed, broadcasting companies are often prompted to advertise other matters, rather than the sport they are broadcasting. Due to broadcasting, some sports get more publicity than others because of the media’s strong preference towards major sports promotions. For example, lacrosse games are almost never nationally televised, even though lots of people in the United States like lacrosse. Sometimes, there are blackouts, and people at home can’t even watch the game they want to watch.
