The mental health of children living at or below poverty standards is a serious concern and will only get worse as time goes on. Stress is one of the main contributors to the mental illnesses that children possess. The long term effect that anxiety and stress has on the children can last forever, it affects every aspect of their lives from how they live to, where they live. The treatment needed to help these children cannot be provided due to the circumstances of their childhoods, this leads to troubled adult lives as well. Children who live in poverty are frequently in danger and grow up and develop mental illnesses that affect their way of life permanently.

When children grow up in an environment where they are constantly exposed to violence and trauma, they develop stress hormones that can affect their abilities to perform daily tasks and build basic social skills. Poverty takes control over a child’s life and limits what …show more content…
Behavior exhibited by students at school can be labeled as “not pulling their load” or not “doing their part” These emotions and characteristics are taught not hardwired into your system. When you are raised in a home where these traits aren’t always apparent, it can be hard to develop them. The way the children act in school can affect how they are treated. Their social lives will be damaged and it will become very difficult to make friends. Teachers may also think that student just doesn’t care and that they are only there to make their jobs harder. Many times the illnesses that the children hold can affect their socialization skills and how they present themselves to people. Although this is a valid cause, children's mental health can affect much more than their behavior at school. This damages every aspect of their lives rather than just one.
