At the end of the Crucible, Proctor truly sacrificed himself, showing his good nature that he has been struggling with since the very beginning. Proctor hasn’t had an easy few months, with an ill wife, a sin that’ll surely haunt and send him to hell. Throughout the last few months and days, Procter goes to court with mary and ends up confessing his adultery, throwing everything he’s been trying so hard to keep, away.
Proctor trying to save not only his wife but his friends and their wives as well. Proctor ricks all he can to defend everyone possible, taking torture as well as other harsh pain for the last few months. Not confessing to anything as he has nothing to confess to. While separation has kept Proctor and Goody proctor they both have had time to think, maybe one more than the other. During one time as Proctor is being spoken to Elizabeth was asked to come into the room to speak to Proctor and hope to gain a confession for it, for separate reasons of Danforth and Hale.
