Old Man and the Sea In the novella The Old Man and the Sea the main character Santiago’s destiny is to kill the marlin. Santiago develops a strong sense of love for the marlin and is torn between killing it and letting it live. As the story goes on it can be seen that Santiago's destiney directly relates to a quote that Oscar Wilde once said, “Every man kills the thing he loves.” by killing the marlin the old man is killing the thing that he loves and respects. Throughout the novella, Santiago talks to the things around him because he is isolated out in the sea and has no one to talk to and he starts to talk to the fish about how he loves it but he is going to kill it . One of the reasons that Oscar Wilde’s quote relates to Santiago’s situation
