In the play, Much Ado About Nothing, by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare criticizes many aspects of his society through the portrayal of his characters. This can be seen in one of the main characters Claudio, an irrational young man that believed he was in love a girl, but in reality was only in love with her looks. Through the portrayal of Claudio as shallow and gullible, Shakespeare criticizes young love as foolish and impulsive. Shakespeare portrays Claudio as shallow and superficial. When Claudio first lays eyes on Hero, he proclaims to Benedick that Hero “is the sweetest lady” he has ever seen (1,1,183).
