Shakespeare is a talented writer that wrote a story about two starcrossed lovers. He is able to implement juxtaposition into his writing to entertain and lure his readers in. Doing this, has gotten him famous all over the word. When William Shakespeare was writing about Romeo and Juliet, he was adding in different uses of juxtaposition and figurative language for three of the main characters: Romeo, Juliet, and Friar Laurence. He shows how they interact with each other to show how their love is fated to die. Shakespeare was able to show indirect characterization when he uses paradox, oxymoron, and juxtaposition to show Romeo and Juliet's complex love for eachother.
Juliet is characterized by Romeo using terms of contrast when he compares her to jewelry and how bright one can be. Romeo said that she is, “[l]ike a rich jewel in an Ethiop’s ear” (1.5.44). Romeo uses juxtaposition to compare Juliet's beauty with a jewel on an ear. Additionally, in the balcony scene, Romeo compares Juliet's beauty to the words “Brightness” “heaven” and “bright” (2.219-20-21). Romeo always talked about how beautiful Juliet was in his short lived life and how she cured him of his sadness. Juliet once talked about how Romeo was pretty and how he was like snow on a raven's back. Then, she found out how he had killed Tybalt and used oxymoron's to compare him to a snake and a tyrant.
