How Does Shukhov Show Dignity

It is clear that in the book One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, Shukhov uses his personal pride and dignity to survive in the harsh conditions of a gulag. Even though Shukhov has a hard life, he continues to show his personal pride and dignity and he proves that these characteristics are needed for survival. As a result of his strong desire to become a skilled worker he fully completes his work, he works to his best abilities, and his dignity earns allows him to get more food than his fellow prisoners. My main arguments that I will be discussing include that he works to his fullest and this helps his fellow prisoners, he has a goal of becoming a skilled worker, and Shukhov earns respect from his fellow prisoners. Due to this, the prisoners respect him and give him extra food. This a great advantage over his fellow prisoners, due the conditions the prisoners are dealing with. For example, Shukhov earns his respect from Tzesar, and he gives Shukhov extra food. Tzesar ignores Fetiukov, because he is not as highly respected as Shukhov. As it states in the text, “It was because he didn't want to be interrupted while smoking and asked for a puff that he had taken up a pipe” Tzesar to Shukhov “Take it, Ivan Denisovich” (30). This exactly shows that Shukhov's pride in himself earn him favors and food from his fellow prisoner. This is also showing that Caesar does not mind being interrupted by Shukhov and he is giving him the puff. His fellow prisoners show him respect and they look up to him. Fetyukov on the other hand, is being looked down upon as a vulture, that is constantly trying to get something from someone. Shukhov gets the tobacco and receives it from Tzesar, because Tzesar respects him. Shukhov has pride for himself and respect for himself. This earns him respect from his fellow
