In novella Of Mice and Men, the author, Steinbeck demonstrates how a simple companionship between two people could cause a difference in the lives involved, both negatively or positively. To do this, the author depicts the characters of George, his friend Lennie, and their relationship. As the author portrays the journey they go through to follow, the American dream during the Great Depression. They are two very different characters, judging from how they are described and also their personal attributes. The novella demonstrates how both individuals intervene in each others lives, every moment. Through the depiction of George, and his relationship with Lennie Steinback reveals how the companionship between any two individuals could result in a horrific end.

As they are wandering through the woods, or running away from trouble, as they progress through the story, together. This is seen as their strong relations, since they do not leave each other till the end. As we read the end of the story, the author depicts, how a close friendship ultimately led to a malevolent act amongst the protagonists. The authors revelation at the end, Steinbeck mentions “Guys like us got no family. They make a little stake an’ then they blow it in. They ain’t got nobody in the worl’ that gives a hoot in hell about ‘em”(). As the readers witness the killing of Lennie by the hands of his companion, George. Though it is debatable whether the mercy killing of lennie was an appropriate choice or not. However it still led to have a fatal effect on the other person. How George and lennie were so involved in each other's lives, which led to the death of Lennie. As George tried to make the best decision for him since he did not want Lennie to suffer.
