How Does Updike Use Internal Conflict

The type of conflict in Updike’s story is the character is internal conflict. A way for Sammy to boost his self-confidence is to stand up against his manager for criticizing the girls for their dress choices. Internally Sammy sees the issue as being right and he doesn’t like the way the girls are being treated. Due to Sammy's age, his age, his background and his immaturity he doesn't know how to handle the situation. But, by the end of the story, he himself has realized that he shouldn’t have acted the way he did but this choice will affect his future. With the store manager being a Sunday school teacher and possibly friends of his parent’s Lengel say’s “Sammy you don’t want to do this to your Mom and Dad,” (Updike 119). Sammy agrees with
