How Is Iago Presented As An Evil Genius

The character Iago of Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello is perceived as devious and maleficent due to how he fooled his alleged “friends” to get what he wanted. Iago can be seen as an evil genius based on how deceived the other characters in the novel. It’s justifiable that Iago is genuinely a hateful person based on how he manipulated the other characters, although he can be perceived as an evil genius. For example, Iago states “But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve For daws to peck; I am not what I am” The quote is significant because it’s revealed that this is the opposite of his personality. Throughout the novel Iago portrays himself as a trustworthy person and has confidence in what he says therefore others believe what he says. It appears that Iago’s lies and stories were the cause of the tragic events that occurred. Iago is jealous of Othello due to him having a better position than himself and him assuming he has had an affair with his wife. Iago decides to ruin the most important feature in his life, his relationship with Desdemona. Othello sees Iago as a friend and someone he could trust, which ends up backfiring, and Iago took that to his advantage. Iago realizes how jealous Othello gets and uses Cassio, Othello’s lieutenant, as his bait. Iago describes his craft as “double knavery”. Iago didn’t plan on Othello killing Desdemona or himself. In the end Othello’s rage and guilt was the cause of tragic events, however Iago’s jealousy lead to end
