How Is Love Presented In The Manhunt

Both of the poems focus on the loss of love. In “The Manhunt”, the couple are unable to move past the physical and psychological impacts of war and as a result have lost the “passionate phase and intimate days”. The use of both “day” and “night” evokes a sense of completion, balance and union. However, this was clearly in the past as it is introduced by the words “after”, representing the diminution of their once “passionate” love. Additionally, the speaker refers to part of the husband’s body metaphorically, comparing them to inanimate objects rather than living things. His jaw is a “blown hinge” perhaps suggesting his inability to express his emotions. This is further highlighted by the mechanical word “hinge” which creates imagery of machinery, dehumanising the husband and further emphasising his lack of affection. …show more content…
The opening line “lying apart now” sets a tone of disconnection and estrangement. The word “now” also shows that there was love in this relationship; however it has been lost through time. The first stanza, concentrates on the physical separation as they are both looking for escapism. The husband escapes using his “book”, whereas the wife escapes by “dreaming of childhood”. It is clear that mentally they are incompatible. This separation is accentuated due to the irregular rhyme scheme which reflects their broken relationship. In “The Manhunt”, the former soldier is no longer able to connect with his wife and unwilling to speak of his experiences, and so their loving relationship is negatively affected. Similarly, in “One Flesh”, the changing nature of their relationship has resulted in a loss of intimacy between the two
