How Is Miss Strangeworth Insane

Ms Strangeworth, the main character from “The Possibility of Evil,” is one of the most ludicrously insane characters that has been written into a story. She is an overly perverse person, shows many dogmatic qualities, and is completely immoral. In the story, Ms. Strangeworth writes letters to the people in her town “warning” them of possibly evil things. Her main reason for doing thing is because ,she believes that it is her job to “protect” the town. She shows perverse behavior when she expresses her feelings, “The town where she had lived had to be kept clean and sweet, but people everywhere were lustful and evil and degraded, and needed to be watched” (Jackson 211). Miss Strangeworth’s opinion of herself is incredibly clear in this quote; she truly thinks that she’s the most perfect person in town, and that everyone is beneath her. Miss Strangeworth’s view of herself is on a much different level than of any other person, thus proving she’s insane. However, there is one more quality Miss Strangeworth possess that most certainly makes her insane. Miss Strangeworth has no sense of morals, no sense of responsibility for the actions that she has done, which in turn only made her perfect little town worse. Her licentious personality can be seen when Miss Strangeworth opens a letter she received from the townspeople, when they found out that she had been the one sending out letters to them and feeding everyone in the town lies. Here is when her true persona shows, “Her hand did not shake as she opened the envelope and unfolded the sheet of green paper inside. She began to cry silently for the wickedness of the world when she read the words: LOOK OUT AT WHAT USED TO BE YOUR ROSES” (Jackson 214).
