“I must not only punish, but punish with impunity”(1). These were the words of Montresor himself before he carried through with the main event. He was a very grim, devious and convincing person. In the story ”The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, there are many times where he talks about his viewpoints on Fortunato, the man who eventually ends up dead. He mentions him being insulted by Fortunato which then he “vowed revenge”. After this, Montresor came up with a plan to distract him from ever guessing he was going to be punished. This punishment resulted in death. Montresor accomplishes killing Fortunato because he is very grim, devious, and confident. Montressor is very grim while planning and proceeding with the murder of Fortunato. “I placed my hand upon the solid fabric of the catacombs, and felt satisfied. I approached the wall;I replied to the yells of him who clamored. I re echoed, I aided, I surpassed them in volume and strength. I did this, and the clamorer grew still,” explained …show more content…
There are a few examples of this in the story such as when he says that, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge. This means that he thinks that he deserves to give this man revenge because of what he did. His family motto also gives a little hint as to his attitude and how he was raised. “No one attacks me with impunity.” He also talks negatively about Fortunato which gives us the idea he thinks he is better than him. Montresor is very confident in where he stands as a person. Therefore, Montresor murders Fortunato very easily because of his grim, devious, and confident traits.
