Christopher Nolan’s 2008 film The Dark Knight may be a film about a superhero fighting against a villain but rooted in the story is a culture of terrorism and counterterrorism efforts. The Joker’s efforts to take down Gotham City and cause chaos in the civilians is a form of domestic terrorism. Batman seeks to stop the Joker and uses sometimes questionable methods as a means to stop him. The Dark Knight has grossed $1 billion revenue to date with a $155.34 million opening weekend. While the film drew its usual Batman fans, comic fans, and a typically younger viewer, the film may have also drawn a crowd which felt discomfort about the Bush administration’s declaration of a war on terror following 9/11 which turned to torture tactics as counterterrorism
