How Ocean Science Has Changed My Life

I have always had an interest in the ocean. I thought it was so cool how something could be so beautiful, large, and have so many diverse creatures from giant whales to microscopic algae. I always love learning about the ocean and my love for it has only grown stronger as I have gotten older. In 8th grade, I job shadowed Veronica Berounsky who has changed my life in a positive way forever. She does research for the URI Graduate School of Oceanography about water quality when I met her I was so intrigued by what she does. Our personalities and interests fit well together and since then I have been helping her collect water samples, organize, and submit data for community service during weekends and summer break. Doing something that's bigger than yourself that will further help people with research is amazing. Then I began high school and Veronica introduced me to a club called Ocean Science Bowl. Ocean Science Bowl is an amazing opportunity where you get to study ocean science topics with a team and then compete against other schools in a competition. My team consisted of three freshman and two sophomores and we all got along great together. We were the youngest team there and we did amazing against juniors and seniors. Science class and Ocean Science Bowl has helped me open my eyes to current issues that affect our ocean and people. I am someone who is always interested and intrigued when learning about the ocean because everything that's happening to our Earth like sea level rise, global warming, extinction of species, coral bleaching, and pollution will affect society in the end. I am passionate about the ocean and all its different factors. Learning about how we affect the ocean, how the ocean affects us, water quality, and most of all marine animals has always engrossed me. I have recently become interested in shellfishing. My dad took an oyster farming class and won a commercial shellfishing license. I then received my student
