Revenge is counterproductive, resulting in the opposite result the individual was looking for. There are many outcomes from revenge that people seek. Some hope to restore honor or dignity. Some wish to teach a lesson to the individual who harmed them. Others want an apology or to punish the wrong-doer. Making the perpetrator feel remorse is also another common desired result of revenge. There is one problem with this though, you cannot make someone feel something they do not want to feel. Others simply want to show power, transforming themselves from a powerless victim to someone who is powerful. Revenge does not bring any of these things nor does it bring closure. Rather it keeps the wound fresh, meaning they still feel or intensify all the emotions they had felt before. They also tend to continue to think about the one who wronged them. It produces a constant cycle, that many others become involved in. The beginning of the cycle starts with someone who wrongs another. The individual who is wronged then seeks revenge. Two different outcomes can come from this. The person who was the victim of revenge can seek revenge for themselves or a different individual who now feels wronged by the revenge can also seek vengeance. The cycle is then repeated. Revenge causes a life-long accumulation of violent behavior and results in a constant war in the society.
