People all over the U.S. have an affection for guns, some of those being assault weapons. The term “assault weapon” is a term used in the US to usually define semi-automatic firearms with a detachable magazine and a pistol grip, and sometimes other features such as a flash suppressor or barrel shroud. These weapons can be cool novelty items to have for display, but they can also be a very dangerous item to have if not stored safely. A large issue with assault weapons is a ban on them, to keep people from using them irresponsibly. School shootings, mass killings, and crimes like bank robberies can be done with such weapons.

The letter was written in the aftermath o9f the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. APHA’s Executive Director Georges Benjamin said “The public health community is ready to work with the president a congress to pass legislation to protect our nation’s children and their families from the growing epidemic of gun violence.” (Tucker).
If the assault weapon ban goes through, then the ban itself would be going against the second amendment (the right to bare arms). Thus changing our original constitution. instead of an assault weapon ban, limit the types of assault weapons that people can own, and how those weapons should be stored. Criminal and psychological background checks could be done on people who buy assault weapons, to make sure that they will not commit a crime. Limit the amount of ammunition they could buy within a certain time. All these steps could easily be implemented into the process of buying
