Have you ever thought about talking spiders or coyotes? Well in both of the folktales “How Stories Came To Earth” and “Coyote Steals Fire” the authors provides both of these characters. The coyote sets on a quest to spread fire to everyone, and anansi, the spider, sets on a quest to spread stories to the world. The other put different elements of folk tale into this story like anthropomorphism, god like entities, goals, and outcomes. These two stories are have more similarities than they are differences. First of all, the two stories have many similarities in the elements of folk tales. The first similarity is both stories provide anthropomorphism. Although it is similar the anthropomorphism it is also different. For example in “How Stories Came To Earth” Anansi was able to shapeshift himself to appear like an old man, but in “Coyote Steals Fire” coyote has to take off his skin to appear different. Another slight difference is the way the god like entity’s acted. In “How Stories Came To Earth” when Anansi completed his quest the sky god was happy to give away his stories to Anansi. On the other hand, in “Coyote Steals Fire” When coyote beats Thunder in gambling Thunder gives away his fire but is extremely mad and tries to kill coyote. Thirdly, an obvious difference is the actual goals of the two stories. In “How Stories Came To Earth” Anansi was trying to get stories from the sky god, and in “Coyote Steals Fire” coyote was trying to get fire from thunder. Lastly, there is a very slight difference in the outcome of the two stories. In “How Stories Came To Earth” when Anansi got the stories he gave them out to everyone around him.
