Trickster Tales “What is the price of the stories?” Anansi the spider asked the Sky God in “How Stories Came To Earth” wanting to obtain all of the Sky God’s Stories, which were kept in a small chest. The African trickster tale, "How Stories Came To Earth" tells the story of a spider named Anansi who wanted to obtain stories which belonged to the Sky God only. As Anansi asks the Sky God -who didn’t take Anansi seriously because he was a small spider- what does the Sky God want in exchange for all of the stories The Sky God asks for him to capture four animals, a python, a panther, a swarm of hornets, and a fairy in exchange for the stories. After not only reading "How Stories Came To Earth", but also the Native American trickster tale, “Coyote Steals Fire,” the two tricksters not only have various similarities, but also have a few differences …show more content…
One of these similarities that are shown is that the two show gods and animals given human like traits, commonly known as anthropomorphism. In "How Stories Came To Earth", Anansi the spider is able to speak, has an intelligent wife named Aso, and comes up with clever plans. And In “Coyote Steals Fire” Coyote is able to speak as well, but he is able to gamble, cheat, and has hands. And another is that the two tricksters were able to achieve their goals, in “How Stories Came To Earth” Anansi captured the required animals and was given all of the stories and shared them all around the earth, while in “Coyote Steals Fire”, Coyote won the gamble he had with the Thunder God so he could obtain fire which the Thunder God possessed, and was able to spread the fire to all of the tribes on earth. And finally, the two tales are the same type of tale , a folktale ,a story passed orally for generations. There are many similarities between the two trickster tales but there are many other similarities between the two
