The Great Depression was a crash in the stock market that put many people out of jobs, businesses bankrupt, and people homeless. The first long term cause of the depression was speculators abusing the stock market. This caused the depression because people bought on margin which led to large amounts of debt, people began to panic and quickly sold their stocks. In 1929, Hoover was elected President. He believed in the wait and see approach, which was based on his belief that the economy had natural cycles of up and down. He also pushed for rugged individualism, which was the reliance of people helping each other, instead of relying on the government. Finally Hoover believed in voluntary cooperation which was also people helping each other without the help of the government. In 1932, Franklin Roosevelt made the New Deal, which was a set of projects and programs providing jobs and relief to many Americans.The New Deal was a success because it provided food to children in need, they made welfare programs to disabled and elderly people, and there was a decrease in the unemployment rate. The New Deal was a success because it provided food for children in need. Document 6 shows that the WPA would prepare warm, and nourishing meals daily. The program Social Security was a relief program meant to ensure welfare to disabled and elderly people. More specifically, it provided monthly pensions to retired people or their survivors. This proves the New Deal was a success because people who were unable to work were still able to survive.
