Besides dependency, there is miss understanding. It takes the siblings awhile to get the point of understanding why their brother/sister is the way they are. Pete doesn’t understand how his brother, Donald can be so careless and irresponsible. Donald in the story messes up a lot at the farm with his religious family, and Pete cannot see why he done such things. A good example would be Webster, the hitchhiker that Donald befriends while they are at diner getting food. Donald gives Webster the rest of the money Pete gave to him because he wants a share of the gold mines Webster has in a different country. Pete, then cannot begin to understand how Donald believed Webster was telling the truth, so they get into an argument, but ultimately Pete still loves his brother despite his flaws. …show more content…
Seeing as how the narrator and Sonny were both afforded the same opportunities, the narrator does not understand how or why Sonny chooses to pursue what he does. The disapproval of Sonny's decision to become a musician stems primarily from his view of musicians in general. His experiences with musicians have led him to believe that they are unmotivated, drug users, seeking only good times and a high from life. The eldest sibling does not understand his brother’s choice to become a musician until he is invited to watch a performance. Then, the narrator begins to see how Sonny relieves his bottled up feelings through music, and as he listens, he connects with his brother. The narrator finally understands parts of his brother’s life he did not
