How The Wiggles Changed Popular Culture

It was during their time completing assessment tasks at university designed to be used in an early childhood educational setting they came up with the idea of forming a children’s entertainment group. Murray Cook and Greg Page called upon their former band member Jeff Fatt to help record a CD of children’s songs; the CD was titled simply The Wiggles. In 1992 the children’s group decided to ‘colour’ each character with their signature skivvies, yellow, green (now blue), purple and red.
Popular culture is defined as cultural activities or commercial products that reflects the taste of the general masses of people. In this instance throughout the last 25 years The Wiggles have changed the way not only Australian’s teach their kids from such a young age; but have changed the world’s perspective on the importance of children’s shows, book, music, and movies, this is a result of popular culture . In 2007, the group won the APRA’s International Achievement Award and the Most Preformed Screen Composer (overseas) award. The Wiggles became an Australian Icon, and still are to this day; and it is believed that their only Australian rival was rock band AC/DC. The Wiggles had become part of not only Australia’s pop culture, but also the world over.
The Wiggles earned several Platinum, Double Platinum, and Multi-Platinum records, as well as sold 23 million DVD’s and 7 million CD. One Direction’s first album ‘Up All Night’ sold 500,000, and sold 3 million copies worldwide. Comparing a recent ‘pop sensation ‘band like ; One Direction’ to The Wiggles proves not only their popularity, but also the icons they have become worldwide for over twenty years, they can not be classed as ‘one hit
