How To Improve Your Early Childhood Competency

After reviewing Minnesota’s Knowledge and Competency Framework (KFC) for Infant and Toddler Professionals I found two competencies that I could assess on myself. There were eight content areas: Child Development and Learning, Developmentally Appropriate Learning Experiences, Relationships with Families, Assessment, Evaluation and Individualization, Historical and Contemporary Development of Early Childhood Education, Professionalism, Health, Safety and Nutrition, and Application through Clinical Experiences.
After reading over these eight content areas I decided that the two that fit me best are Child Development and Learning, and Developmentally Appropriate Learning Experiences. Understanding Child Development is the first competency that I read and found myself inside of, especially in level one, explores. For example, through spending time with young children to taking Early Childhood classes I have learned a lot about child development: cognitive, physical, and social/emotional. I find myself at level two: implements. I have babysat lots of young children in the past and nannied for a family of three, through these experiences I have grown relationships with these children that I will have for a lifetime. Throughout the years these children have grown a sense of trust and belonging to me as have I. Throughout these experiences I have provided the children with a safe, stable, nurturing relationship even though most of them haven’t experienced trauma. For example, I still get to see these children even though I am at college and the relationship I made with them will stick with them and me for a lifetime.
