How far can bravery get you? Nightjohn is a story written by Gary Paulsen about a slave named Nightjohn. Nightjohn is a slave that lives on a cotton plantation and owned by his master named Waller. Waller tries to break the slaves and most of all he tries Nightjohn. Nightjohn is the bravest of them all and teaches everyone to be brave at all times, even when times are toughest. Through Nightjohn, readers have Bravery can get you a long way down the road because it is needed. To start off, Nightjohn has many scars because he was whipped, beaten and had his middle toe cut off on both feet. When Nightjohn was punished, the book says “Nightjohn still not making any sounds, but his stiff. Like it’s carved out of rock”. What Nightjohn did to “deserve” this was getting caught sneaking out to teach Alice to read and write. Reading and writing are prohibited for slaves and was punishment by removal of an extremity. On page 79, Nightjohn was not working for 3 days because he had his toes chopped off and he still insist to teach alice in private. Nightjohn, as you can tell, is a brave man because barbarick toe removing was not enough to stop him from education the other slaves. Nightjohn definitely is staying brave for alice and the others because he wants other people to do or go somewhere in life besides working on a plantation.
