The 1962 movie To Kill a Mocking Bird is based off of the 1960 book by Harper Lee, which was written at the height of the Civil Rights movement in America. The plot takes place in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama during the early 1930s. The story focusses on Scout Finch and her brother Jem and the story covers three years. Scout and Jem start off as innocent children who spend their summers playing games with the rumors they hear about their neighbor Arthur “Boo” Radley while they often spy on him. Their father, Atticus, is a town lawyer and has strong beliefs that all people are to be treated fairly despite skin color, to turn the other cheek, and to stand for what you believe in. Through their father's work, Scout and Jem begin to learn of the racism and evil in their town, mostly aggravated by the poverty of the Depression, and they mature quickly as they are exposed to it, much like how Harper Lee learned through her father. Atticus, who has been seen as the hero of the story and the role model for lawyers even today, is appointed by the judge to represent a black man, Tom Robinson, who is accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell, a poor white farmer. While at school, Jem and Scout get called names, “N*gger-lover” and made fun of by the children because their father is representing a black man.
