sometimes winning isn’t enjoyable without losing once or twice. I thought confidently our competitors were incapable to defeat my skillful cheer team going onto the massive stage. Though I was tremendously wrong, we kept our heads high. After the disappointing experience, I learned a meaningful lesson for life.
To begin a day like no other, the clock sprang to life at 6:00 A.M. in The Orleans hotel by the tail end of the Las Vegas Strip. That day, I would participate at Jamz National Cheer Championships, one of the biggest, invitational competition on the west coast. I observed the other teams’ performances thinking our team had a likelihood to win. Finally at 10:00 P.M., the awards began. The staff started launching prizes like shirts and bracelets at the crowd, and they demonstrated their advanced gymnastics and stunting capability. Once they got the crowd excited, the announcer called our division first. “Performance Cheer! Division 13!” My heart raced as it was about to have a heart attack. All the effort this season goes into this one moment. Slowly, they started calling from the bottom. “ We had 13 teams in this division. Only seven teams placed. Starting with seventh place...seventh place...Jets! Sixth place...sixth place...Ultimate Diamonds!” If our team won the title, I would be mind blown! “Fifth place..fifth place…” “I hope they don’t call our name!” I whispered. “Fifth place...Walnut Valley Cowboys!” The announcer stated.
