World War I didn’t just affect the lives of soldiers; it affected the lives, hopes, and dreams of everyone. Soldiers found ordinary life strange after such a traumatizing experience that no one could relate to or fully comprehend. In fact, an entire generation of young men was “lost” because they lost their vision for life and found it impossible to find peace. Factory workers had to make weaponry used in the war, and lived in guilt for supplying such murderous tools. Many innocent people were killed if they lived in cities where the war was thriving. The war took thousands of lives, and left the rest to live in fear and sadness. World War I was a period full of fear. The war affected the lives of the mothers and wives whose sons or husbands were fighting in the war. These women had to live their life in anxiety and fear for their loved one’s lives, never knowing when or if they would return. Soldiers feared for their own lives and the lives of their loved friends and comrades who fought next to them. Men feared for the draft and being forced to fight in the war; forced to leave their families and jobs for a world of darkness and uncertainty. I would have been taught at a very young age that fighting in war was heroic and honorable, a position to be coveted and praised. However, when being sent to the alien environment of war, I would probably realize that I was betrayed and tricked by their elders; the patriotism of my heart would be replaced by the nightmare of bloodshed. After being forced to watch my friends and comrades fall to death around me, I’d learn the new lesson of how the fear of death’s darkness greatly overpowers the supposed “honor” of serving in war. War would provide me with a clear perspective of the evils of humanity, and how such evils controlled one’s individual life
