I have been supervising and managing staff for more than 10 years, thriving as a Director and Chair since 2007, and have confidently led diverse groups of up to 50 personnel. As the Chair of Selma University, I inherited a dysfunctional and discouraged team. The university was in distressed need of a Chair, and there was a leadership vow for over a decade and the group was left without structural. The team was dysfunctional because they lacked the guidance to adequately perform their duties and simple tasks that should take a few days took weeks, morale was at an all-time low, employees show no pride in their work and avoid following the rules. The group consisted of 15 males and 10 females all them except 5 was current faculty members of the university. I performed an pre-evaluation on all the members with up-to-date requirements of higher learning educators’ standards; provided training sessions to enhanced the team skills with new technology and equipment; provided training sessions on how to find unseen resources for the department. Prior to the post-evaluations, I met one on one with each team member, actively listened to their perspectives of the training sessions and the new standards. The majority of the veteran faculty members encouraged the training sessions; therefore, I scheduled weekly meeting with different facilitators. The weekly meetings clarify my expectations, foster open communications, maintain accountability, and implore ideas from members.
