1. How does an organizations strategic plan relate to a decision to purchase information technology such as an electronic health record system?
With the current changes in the health care industry and the number one concern becomes delivering safe, effective and quality of care to the patient’s. By implementing the electronic health record system, these factors will be covered and this will save the organization from having medical errors. “It is widely believed that increased use of electronic medical records (EMRs) will improve the quality of health care and the efficiency with which it is delivered” (Lakbala & Dindarloo, 2014, p. 1). Research were done and viewed by the hospitals prior to purchasing the electronic health record system. It was discovered that having the electronic health record system, resulted in shorter hospital stay, reduction in mortality rate, and decreased chances of hospital readmission (Lee, Kuo, & Goodwin, 2013, p. 4). The electronic health record system allows “faster ordering of physician tests, procedures, medications, test, procedures, speeds the processing/scheduling discharges, and reduce delays in the service order process (p. 5). This will have a long term benefits of saving the organization money by preventing human medical errors. Although the system cost the organization a lot of money to purchase, maintaining the system and training the necessary staff on how to use the technology, in the end, will be beneficial for the organization.
