Hubris performs a decisive role in movies, especially in sports film. A simplistic definition of hubris is a great or foolish amount of pride, overconfidence, lack of humility, and outrageous arrogance. In the film Eight Men Out the viewer can find hubris at work in various stages. When first viewing the film it was clearly evident that Charles Comiskey the owner of the Chicago White Sox’s was displaying hubris. In the beginning of the film, Charles Comiskey was displaying a great amount of pride when speaking with the reporters. When asked if his team will win Charles responded it’s not a question if my team will win but when they will win. This story revolves around former MLB pitcher Curt Schilling and his gaming company 38 studios which ultimately went bankrupt. For this story hubris can be found at various stages ranging from extreme arrogance, greed, to even excessive pride. Examples of this can include his greed of wanting to become Bill Gates rich, his excessive pride in saying how this game will be better than anything out in the market, to Curt’s arrogance in not listening to experts and other people when believing he knew better. In the end, this hubris played out to the company declaring bankruptcy leaving a bad taste in certain employees to even the public. In comparing the hubris between Eight Men Out and End Game there is some correlation as well as varieties. For the similarities both Charles and Curt express the same type of hubris such as arrogance, overconfidence, and greed. For example, both men had arrogance Charles thought he was above the players while Curt believed that his own opinion was better than the one from his experts. They both were overconfident Charles in believing that his team was going to win the world series while Curt believed that his first game will be the best. Finally, both were greedy Charles always looked for ways to take money away from the players such as not paying them their bonuses while Curt wanted to become Bill Gates
