Huck matures greatly throughout the novel, he opens up his conscience, and begins to value his relationship with Jim. Huck is seen running away from his father after he fakes his death, while Jim is running away from slavery. Huck considers turning Jim in for the money, but eventually realizes Jim is equal to him and everybody else. In the beginning of the novel, Huck views Jim as property. While on the island together, they confess their true reasons for running away. Huck shames Jim for running away as he still sees Jim as property. Huck eventually discovers the town has put out bounties them. Huck doesn’t understand why the town has put out a specific bounty for him, until he realizes he faked his death the same night Jim escaped from Miss Watson. The town had assumed Huck must have taken part in Jim's escape, by guiding him away from Miss Watson to avoid being sold down to New Orleans. Huck enters into a panic, which allows him to see Jim is the only person he can trust. When Huck realizes the island is no longer a safe haven, he yells to Jim “Git up and hump yourself, Jim!. When boatman approach Huck on the river, they question him whether he is transporting slaves or not. The boatman ask to search Huck’s boat, but he tells them the only people on board are his sickly family suffering from smallpox. This scares the boatman who fear they will contract the disease if they enter the cabin.”Poor devil, there's something in that. We are right down sorry for you, but we-well, hang it, we don’t want the smallpox, you see.”(90) Huck endangers his life to prevent Jim from getting caught, and successfully forces the boatman back . This situation reveals how Huck truly values his friendship with Jim. Huck knew if they had searched the boat, Jim would have been taken
