Setting and Characters Journal Hunters in the Snow, written by Tobias Wolff is a short story that is centered on three main characters who all have unique personalities, Tub, Frank and Kenny, who decided to take a trip to the woods for hunting. They each are struggling to stay in control while at the same time battling the weather. The action takes place in a wintry framework, snowy and cold which according to the story, is making the characters’ hearts to freeze. The cold hostile environment seems to put its imprint on the souls of these hunters and the reader can see throughout the course of the story how the characters' bonds change. One of the most sympathetic character in the story is Tub, who appeared in the entire story from the begging till the end. Wolff described Tub as a character who went through different stages, from being a victim in one scene, and then being a murder in another (48, 53). In the beginning Kenny and Frank are all buddy while Tub is left out. This is seen when Tub is forced to walk on one side of the creek by himself (Wolff 50). Also Kenny knows what is going on with Frank while Tub is left in the dark. After Kenny is shot, Tub and Frank reach a better understanding of each other, while Kenny is fading away in the bed of the Truck. Both Tub and Frank pour their problems out to each other and accept each other for it. Kenny begins to be left out of the picture.
