This debate continued through the late 20th through the 21st century due to customs, safety, and morals. If the hunter wounds an animal, they can put the animal out of its misery quicker. Hunters using a semi-automatic won't "spray and pray". A manually operated firearm can still put a whole through something. Opponents of this claim believes people shouldn’t be able to use semiautomatic firearms for hunting. People should be able to hunt with semiautomatic firearms.

The "spray and pray" theory is completely dependent on the shooter not the firearm that the hunter is using. Also in most states there is a law limiting sportsmen to only three to five rounds of ammunition in their magazine when hunting. Hunters don’t want to taint the meat they are going to use to feed their families. Also if the person has a limited magazine capacity of three to five rounds, the person would most likely wont have the mindset of "spray and pray". Many people believe that you only need one or two rounds of ammunition that other types of firearms can provide. You only need three rounds to hunt deer and any other animal. Having a semi-automatic is more of a massacre not hunting. "If you can't get the deer in one or two shots, you don’t belong in the woods."
