Hurricane Sandy and the Ebola Outbreak Winds up to eighty miles per hour, torrential down pour and catastrophic waves have more in common with an epidemic than one might think. The deadly disease, Ebola, instilled more fear on Americans than it should have and Hurricane Sandy caused more damage to the east coast than many were prepared for. Hurricane Sandy and the Ebola outbreak in the United States caused much of America to experience panic, mass destruction and the creation of helpful organizations. Ebola is an infectious disease that, in most cases, results in death. Its most common symptoms include high fever and severe internal bleeding, but external bleeding, headaches, sore throat, weakness and loss of appetite can also be seen. …show more content…
Because Hurricane Irene was not nearly as catastrophic as predicted, many chose not to leave their homes, especially in Manhattan. By staying, the residents put themselves and the lives of the emergency responders in grave danger. Although they did not leave their homes, many still took some precautions.
Those who were affected by Hurricane Irene prepared for the worse. Many used ply wood to board up their houses or stores, wiped the shelves of grocery stores clean and even dried up gas stations. Owner of South 7 Citgo Station in New Milford stated “Everyone is panicky. Oh my God, they bring in any kind of container they can think of and fill it with gas!” (Persaud). Those preparing were more worried about the flooding than the winds. Panic was present, but not as much as a storm like Hurricane Sandy seemed should have gotten.
Hurricane Sandy began as a tropical wave in the Caribbean on October 19, 2012, but quickly became a tropical storm after just six hours. It was officially named a hurricane on October 24. It became a category 2 hurricane but after hitting Jamaica and Cuba it quieted down back into a tropical storm. President Obama made a huge leap forward in the fight against Ebola. February 11, 2015 he talked about how the United States Ebola fight will move to a new phase. Troops will be coming home from Liberia, where the disease is popularly found, and some U.S. government personnel will remain and work to boost the public health. New vaccines will be tested and new therapies against Ebola will be tried. The focus is to eliminate all cases of Ebola. The President states, “for as long as Ebola simmers anywhere in the world, we will have Ebola fighting heroes coming back home with the disease from time to time.” (Obama). The spike in cases reported in Guinea and Sierra Leone just underline the challenges still to overcome. The world is interconnected so to stop the disease, the disease must be eliminated
