Combinatorial chemistry comprises chemical synthetic methods that make it possible to prepare a large number (tens to thousands or even millions) of compounds in a single process. These compound libraries can be made as mixtures, sets of individual compounds or chemical structures generated by computer software (Clifton E. Barry III et al. 2000). Green chemistry is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the generation of hazardous substances. Following the procedures of the combinatorial chemistry we have synthesized a 7x7 library of hydrazones using green chemistry synthesis of hydrazines on aldehydes. Hydrazones are organic compounds formed usually by the action of hydrazines on ketones or aldehydes. These compounds possess diverse biological and pharmacological properties such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antifungal (Alaaddin et al. 2006). These compounds contain C = N bond, which is …show more content…
Therefore, the search for antimicrobials is a never-ending task. Hydrazone derivatives are one of the new promising antimicrobials that have been developed and evaluated for their antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine if hydrazones possess antimicrobial properties, and if they do which hydrazone library will be the most effective in stopping the bacterial growth. It is hypothesized that hydrazones which possess halogenated functionalities will possess greater antimicrobial activity than those compounds with nitro compounds. The ultimate goal of the study is to determine if hydrazones possess antimicrobial activity, but it is also to determine if there is a specific molecular target in the microbe, what is the mode of growth inhibition induced by hydrazones and if the hydrazone library can be deconvoluted to determine exactly which aldehyde and which hydrazine gives the greatest
