Melinda has many stressors throughout the novel. Her main stressor is the secret she keeps from everyone about being raped at the party. Her logic is that by not talking about it, the memory will just go away; “The whole point of not talking about it, of silencing the memory, is to make it go away. It won’t”. Also, Melinda is forced to face her assailant everyday at school. The first time she sees the boy who raped her, Andy, after the attack, she is in the school hallway; “I see IT in the hallway. IT goes to Merryweather. IT is walking with Aubrey Cheerleader. IT is my nightmare and I can’t wake up. IT seems me. IT smiles and winks. Good thing my lips are stitched together or I’d throw up”. Also, Melinda is falling behind in school. In middle school, she was described as being a straight B student, however, her grades in high school average closer to a C for the first quarter. As the school year progresses, her grades continue to fall and by the third quarter, she is failing three classes. …show more content…
She goes into high school saying “We fall into clans. I am clanless. I am Outcast”. She is able to befriend a new student who just moved to Syracuse from Ohio named Heather. However as the book progresses, Heather is scared away by Melinda’s reputation at the school, and even says to Melinda, “You don’t like anything. You are the most depressed person I’ve ever met, and excuse me for saying this, but you are no fun to be around and I think you need professional help”. Melinda’s relationship with Heather is not healthy, since their friendship is based on Heather and her issues, making it very one sided. When Heather asks Melinda for help after abandoning her, Melinda stands up to Heather and says no, saying “ She’s selfish and cold”. This allows Melinda to retake control of their relationship and stop Heather from using Melinda for her own
