"I Have A Dream" Speech: Summary and Response

It all started on a summer day in August of 1963, in monumental Washington, D.C. The legendary speech that is recognized as one of the greatest and most important speeches in the American history books. The speech made by Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King brought more than 200,000 people to the Lincoln Memorial. His speech was created as an organized effort to get legislation to end racial segregation.

He uses the words "Now is the time" in repetition to grab the audience's attention and address this important issue of racial segregation. He uses the lines " Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God’s children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood." (King, 1963).

The second half of his speech portrays a dream of a better future of racial peace and integration. The most famous paragraph speaks of the most memorable theme “I have a dream”. His dream includes the opportunity for all races to work in peace and harmony. He wants the most racist states to be places of peace. He also wants his children to live in a nation of equality. He couldn't wait for the day where his children could do the same as everyone else could, where equality would be established. He concludes his powerful speech by yelling the words “Let freedom ring!” (King, 1963).
