Even though I Hear America Singing! does not have a rhyme scheme, that does not mean it is not a work of poetry. The story is broken down into short stanzas with constant repetition. The word “singing” appears a total of ten times in the poem (not including the title), and each time it is used in a different line - except for “The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands. The other word that is commonly used is “The”. It begins all but four lines in the poem, being repeated seven times in at the beginning of each line. Each line also begins with a capital letter and not every line is a sentence, which is an element of poetry. I Hear America Singing! is a poem because of the format and repetition, even though there are no rhymes.
