I Love Lucy Analysis

For my comparison, I chose two comedies that are extremely popular with the audience of their time period. I chose an episode of I love Lucy, a very popular comedy in its time, and I chose an episode of Modern Family, a very popular show that is currently being produced. To begin, surprisingly both shows have diverse characters as the main characters. In I Love Lucy, Lucy is of Caucasian descent and Ricardo is of Cuban descent. In the episode of Modern Family, the main female character, Gloria, is of Columbian descent and her husband, Jay, is of Caucasian descent. Those similarities can be a bit shocking because even though it is perfectly acceptable to have a diverse cast in a T.V. show in today’s world, it wasn’t very common in the era …show more content…
For example, in the beginning of the episode of I love Lucy, Lucy is shown to be giving a baby a bath in an extremely improper way, which makes the audience laugh. In the episode of Modern Family, Gloria is one of the main sources of comedy as she does many inappropriate things, such as steal a cake from a mother, and run over a barrier that is preventing her from leaving a parking structure. The men in the show are shown to just simply shake their heads at their wives antics and try to stop them from being so “silly”, but ultimately fail in that aspect. The men in both shows seem to try to be the one who holds the power in the family, but the women do not listen and do whatever they want anyways. For example, in I love Lucy, when Ricardo tries to tell Lucy to stop doing improper bathing and changing technique with the baby doll, she doesn’t really listen and tries to continue doing her techniques and justify them by explaining that that is what she had read. In Modern Family, Gloria justifies her silly ways, such as trying to hold her baby inside her stomach while being in active labor, by saying she doesn’t want her older son to have to share his birthday with his
