Hi, I’m Ibna Fatima and I would like to share my culture. I was born in the United States while my parents were born in India. I learned that following a specific culture can sometimes change the way you perceive things because of background knowledge you may have. My culture plays in on a lot of my life, from what I eat, wear, and just how I live everyday life. The 10 objects I chose to represent my culture is a hijab, mango juice, jasmine flowers, India’s flag, coconut oil, biryani, spicy food, Indian money (rupees), a henna cone, and turmeric powder. Even though half of them are food related, they have a lot to do with my culture. I’m a Muslim, which means I wear a hijab. A hijab covers your hair and represents modesty. I chose this mango juice with the brand name “Maaza” which I think means good in the language I speak which is Urdu. Urdu is basically close to the same thing as Hindi. In Urdu, we call it Mehndi and in Arabic it is called henna. Henna is actually a plant and we make a paste from it, stick it into a cone, and then apply to our skin and wait so it can stain our skin. Henna is not only a form of art, but it has also been applied for luck, joy, and beauty. Lastly, I chose turmeric powder because it’s probably the one spice we use in almost every single Indian dish, besides chili powder. Over the past years, I’ve learned a lot more about my culture and I learned to love it as well. I’m proud to be an Indian American but at the same time I’m glad I don’t have the same accent my parents have. I like being able to eat different food, try new things, and learn more about my culture. Doing this project has helped me understand my culture better, and realize we’re still all different from the traditions we use, the food we eat, and the clothes we
