Ibuprofen is also known as: Brufen, Motrin, Dolgit, Liptan, Nuprin, and Butylenin. Its Molecular Formula is C13H18O2 and its molecular weight is 206.28082. The compound is a small organic compound composed of thirteen carbon atoms, eighteen hydrogen atoms, and two oxygen atoms. At standard temperature and pressure it is a crystalline solid with a white/off-white color. Ibuprofen also has acidic properties. Ibuprofen is used for relieving pain, reducing inflammation, and alleviating fever. Ibuprofen is manufactured and was derived from propanoic acid in the 1960’s by a pharmaceutical company called Boots. Work started in the 1950s to find a drug to treat rheumatoid arthritis (inflamed joints) that had fewer side effects than aspirin. However, ibuprofen was not launched until 1969. The chemical properties of Ibuprofen include a melting point of 74 to 77 degrees Celsius and slight solubility in water, though it is readily soluble in ethanol and similar solvents. Ibuprofen is used daily by millions of people worldwide and can now be found in many stores and under many trade names. It is sold over the counter, but usually in smaller doses of about 200mg. People take Ibuprofen to settle many types of aches or pains. Most of the time it is taken in doses of 400mg to 800mg at a time. Ibuprofen is not a naturally occurring compound, it is synthesized.
