Ida Bell Wells was born on July 16th 1862, in Holly Springs, Mississippi as a slave during the American Civil War. (Lisandrelli, 1998) Her parents Lizzie, and Jim Wells were of course slaves as well; Jim a product of rape from a white slave owner, to a black slave and Lizzie, separated from her family and sold at 7 years of age. Since Ida was young, she heard of the hardships, beatings, and suffering that slaves had to endure at the hands of these evil white masters. This made her aware at a young age of the injustices that people of color had to face in this country.
In 1892 Ida’s good friend Thomas Moss opened up The People’s Grocery, which was a successful grocery store that also happened to be across the street from a white man’s (W. H. Barrett’s) failing

During this time it was not uncommon for jealousy to fuel most lynchings throughout the south; actually this was the reason for a lot of the lynchings done by whites during this time period. This story was no different. After Thomas heard of the rumors to lynch him, he and other black men took up arms and stood their ground against the white men who they thought were the lynch mob, but soon came to realize was law enforcement. They dropped their weapons and were immediately escorted to jail. Sometime later the actual lynch mob showed up to the jail, kidnapped the men involved and lynched them about a mile way.
The lynching of Ida’s friend was a major turning point in her speaking out about the lynchings, and injustice throughout the country. Once she heard of this incident, Ida B Wells bought a pistol in case of some sort of stronger form of retaliation by the mob, or KKK since
