Identity Analysis Essay Identity plays a key role in our lives because it determines who we are and represent. We base our identity on people we look up to and our surrounding. Even our time period could play a significant role in our identity. In Anne Lamott ‘s article “Why I make Sam go to Church,” Church was a big part of her Identity and she wants Sam to follow in the churches’ footsteps. The church gave her love and showed her the right qualities to have while pregnant for Sam. Although Anne is a single mother, she always had the church from the beginning of her journey raising Sam. A key person in her success of raising Sam was Mary Williams. Mary Williams became her family and she identifies with Anne and Sam in many ways. She denies the horrible label of single mother and appreciates, and accepts them as family so she identified with the church and loving people of St. Andrews.

The reason the church Identifies with Anne is because they help throughout her whole pregnancy with Sam. They welcomed her with open arms and accepted her responsibilities as their own. Another key detail to back up my claim is when she first had Sam. In the article Anne Said, “They called him our baby, or even sometimes my baby” (Lamott102). This Cleary proves her denial of single motherhood and shows how the church identifies as family because how much she relied on them. In my research, I found this article in pitlane magazine and it read “single mothers are the plight of society and their kids are most likely to get in trouble in the future”.
