In this play, Sophocles unravels the true identity of Oedipus Rex. Oedipus is asked to save the city of Thebes but soon find out who he really is. Oedipus was the land’s pollution (400). He is the murderer of the king he seeks (400,415). Oedipus was not expecting for Teiresias to call him out and refuse to believe anything he said. Teirsias asked, “Do you even know who your parents are” (484)? Now Oedipus gets to thinking if his parents really who they say they are. So he asked, “What parents? Stop! Who are they of all the world” (510-513)? Interesting, is Oedipus really going to find out who his parents really is? Was the blind prophet really telling the truth? “O God, I think I have called a curses upon myself in ignorance” said Oedipus (862). Once reading this statement, I think that Oedipus was starting to figure out his truth. Was the oracle’s prophecy becoming true? Now here comes the messenger from Corinth telling Oedipus he is no kin to Polybus in blood (1147). The messenger continues to explain the truth about Oedipus but Jocasta wanted the questioning to stop. Oedipus say to her, “With such clues I could not fail to bring my birth to light” (1205). I find it interesting that Jocasta was trying to keep the truth from Oedipus but lastly say to him, “O Oedipus, unhappy Oedipus! That is all I can call you, and the last thing that I shall ever call you” (1222). Now she gets to the point where she knows the truth and does not want him to know for his own sake. So now as the truth is revealed, Oedipus now knows who is parents are and has fulfill his prophecy. He has committed a sin of killing his father, the king, and has laid up with his mother.
