The video is about how empowering it is to include students on their own IEP meeting and to include them on the decision of their future. According to the video, professionals normally don’t speak openly with students about their disabilities, so they don’t understand about their legal rights, and don’t even know why they are in special education classes. Involving students on their IEP, build their self-esteem, self-awareness and stimulate self-advocacy. Self-awareness – students must be aware of their strengths and their weaknesses in order to define what they need to achieve their goals
Self-advocacy – knowing about their needs, students are able to advocate for themselves, being aware of their rights and asking for accommodations in future situations
Student-centered meetings – IEP meetings should focus on students’ needs, and for that they could not be apart of the process, but the center of the meeting
Student-led IEP meeting – it is when the student leads the IEP meeting, letting all the professionals know their needs and goals, so they can all work together towards the same objective

I don’t work as a teacher yet, but what I understood from this video is that it is fundamental to ask the students before making decisions about their future. Apparently, professionals assume their goals, assume their weaknesses and their strengths, without asking. Working with children, from now on, I would respect them more as individuals, always trying to empower them and building their
