“Envy is ignorance, Imitation is Suicide.” The story, “Self Reliance,” by Ralph Waldo Emerson is a transcendentalist essay containing the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes, the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow their own instincts and ideas.Transcendentalism focuses on being original and self-dependent. In this time period, everyone needs to be comfortable with them in order to succeed in life. The quote, “Envy is ignorance, Imitation is Suicide,” means if you envy someone or are jealous of them then you are a fool because no one is perfect and everyone has problems. If you imitate someone then you are sacrificing your own individuality. In other words, don’t try to conform to the status quo. Someone I know once was envious of other people and they tried killing themselves. Also, in the movie, Mean Girls, two of the characters named Gretchen and Cady are envious of Regina George. Mean Girls is about a girl, Cady, who moves from Africa and attends Public School for the first time. She befriends a group of actual ‘mean girls’ named Regina, Gretchen, and Karen. Gretchen and Cady are envious of Regina because she’s the most popular girl in school who controls people and gets whatever she wants. Gretchen is envious because she just wants to be popular and she’s afraid Regina is starting to dislike her and will like Cady more. Cady is envious because she liked a boy named Aaron and when Regina found out, she started dating him leaving Cady to start acting more like her to try to get Aaron to date her instead. But it didn’t really work out, she eventually got Aaron, but along the way people in her school started hating her for the way she was acting...like
