Teamwork/pg. 116: The collaboration of two or more people to manage impressions jointly.
In the documentary, Wetbacks, when illegal immigrants cross the borders in Mexico or the United States they are in groups, often working as teams. They can be in groups of two or even more. Some illegal immigrants stick together as a clique for security, or as “an extra pair of eyes” while they travel up north. Some of the people step up and act as leaders who guide the rest of the “team”. They may act as a navigator and show the rest of the group where to cross the borders where they have the least potential of getting caught by border patrol officers. The reason being is that they operate out of the societal norms. These people are willing to take risks that not every person would be willing to do. They are motivated to take the risk of illegally crossing the United States borders to pursue a better life. In order to accomplish this goal, they need to make a game plan. They may need to meet in secrecy, as a group, in order to create such a plan. They operate out of the norms to pursue that potential goal and do it under circumstances that many other people would not be willing to risk their lives for. They also follow routes that could may be keep them out of the sites of border patrol officers. That, in of itself, takes a lot courage to do. There is a lot of risk involved in crossing the borders of the United States illegally, but that risk could turn out to be a fatal flaw in their plan if they get caught by gangs. Gangs are also subcultures. They operate by their own set of rules which tend to fall outside of societal norms. MS13 is one example of the gangs mentioned in the documentary. What makes them stand out is their brutality. They are one of the largest gang organizations in the United States and Canada. These individuals have been known to attack people who attempt to cross the borders illegally. They catch illegal immigrants who cross their lines or when they try jumping onto moving trains. This country loves, and cherishes the fact that they are “The land of the free and the home of the brave”. The rights of its citizens and their safety is a primary concern for our government . Immigrants, including illegal immigrants, also share these same desires. They also want to live in a country where their rights and lives are protected. However, in countries such as Mexico and the United States there are many people who do not want these individuals to enjoy such privileges, especially those who cross their borders illegally. That, in of itself, is a value contradiction. Some citizens of these countries want people to enjoy these freedoms in their homeland, however, they do not want to see people enter their country illegally and enjoy those same rights and privileges. Some members of the United States government and its citizens want those individuals to stay in the countries that they originated from and do not want them to enter their domain. The United States, and even Mexico, feel threatened by illegal immigrants. One reason is that some those illegal immigrants could be carrying illegal drugs or dangerous weapons across the border. The governments are not the only ones who fear these people bringing in those items to their country, some of their citizens also feel the same way. Some people feel so threatened by illegal immigrants that they want to protect the borders under their own
