Illness narratives give people an inside look into an illness getting the perspective of what it is like for the patient. With illness narratives, it gives others with the same illness hop and why even push them to keep going and not give up. It can even be beneficial for others who do not share the illness like family or friends who have a loved one with an illness. Others can find it educational, inspirational, and influential. I think illness narratives are extremely beneficial to doctors as well. It gives the doctors an eye opening view on what the illness is really like for the patient, not from a medical standpoint. I would have never been able to have guessed she had depression in the past until our sophomore year of high school. She was becoming more and more quiet, always missing school, receiving bad grades, and dressing in baggy comfy clothes. People were all assuming that she was just sick with a cold, or that she just didn’t care about school. It wasn’t until one night when we were having a sleepover that she told me about how she was sexually abused by a family member. They always were there to stop each other from self-harming themselves and would stay with them when things got hard. Jasmine and Emily had a mutually understand making it easier for them to be around each other because they knew they didn’t need to put on a happy face if they were feeling bad. The only downside of this friendship was that Jasmine family thought it was causing her to act differently and causing more fights at home. Jasmine said after meeting Emily, she was becoming sick of having to pretend that everything was okay. Once she stopped acting at home, her family just blamed her attitude change because of Emily and didn’t seem to care what was really going on with Jasmine. They were all too happy to hear that Emily was going to be moving that summer. Once Emily left Jasmine went back to popping pills and one day after a fight with her father, she took more than she had before and woke up poking in the bath. From her parents’ point of view Jasmine was sick because she had skipped dinner yet for Jasmine this opened her eyes that she was done with causing herself pain and just wanted her parents to realize that there was something wrong.
