Immature In The Watsons

Christopher Paul Curtis’s historical fiction novel The Watsons go to Birmingham -- 1963 clearly shows that the main character, Kenny is immature. Specifically, when he believes all the lies Byron tells him, or when he says something very mean to Rufus, and even when he tries to emulate Byron’s actions even though they will get him punished. First of all, you can see he is very immature by just the stories he believes from his older brother Byron. You would think Kenny would start to notice a pattern in Byron’s stories. It just shows that he will believe anything he hears from anyone. For instance, Byron says “Say, kid, … You wanna learn somethin’ that might save your stupid life one day? … We gonna teach you how to survive a snow blizzard.”(Curtis 8) He believed it from his brother and his friend who never …show more content…
This shows his immaturity is not only from him, but it is also coming from his role model Byron. He just wants to do what his older brother is doing. Byron is setting a bad influence and Kenny is taking it in as a good one. Specifically when he says this, “ If momma gave Byron some stupid punishment, then maybe it would be worth it to flush some nazis down the toilet myself” (Curtis 70). This shows that Byron is actually influencing Kenny’s actions and he might even try the stunts he does himself. That's why momma has to actually burn her own son just to teach him a lesson and to get their other children just to notice that that kind of behavior is not right. Also, it shows that Kenny is not mature enough to tell that kind of behavior is not ok.

Furthermore, the reason Kenny can be immature is not because he listens to lies, or can be shortsighted about what he says, and even trying to repeat actions that may harm himself or others, the reason he is immature is because he is not an adult so he is still learning about how to be
